GEARING UP TO PRODUCE FIBER ARTS

Toddler Blanket - Extra Large
appx 61" by 61", including ruffled edge
Acrylic yarn
$165.00

This particular blanket was made for a neighbor friend, as an Easter present for their toddler, who I think is about a year and a half old. I call this stitch "the yucca stitch" because that's what it looks like to me, but also because I forgot what its real name is!

The blanket is very tightly woven, giving it a thick feel, especially with the mad, wonderful ruffle around the edge. Ruffles like this use up a LOT of yarn in a small space, but it is worth it. It looks gorgeous, and babies love to squish it between their fingers. The "yucca" detail also adds a great deal of depth of feel, which appeals to baby.

The blanket is temporarily stored with a home-made sachet of organic lavender in a purple organza bag. Even though the blanket is composed of a man-made yarn (acrylic), which does not feed bugs, I like to store my finished work with organic lavender to keep everything fresh until given or sold.

I provide pictures of this blanket as an example of one type of blanket I intend to produce and offer for sale in future. I will update the blog with finished blankets ready for sale, when the time comes.

I will be wandering through the color palette with this blanket, especially with the extra large toddler blanket, which will invariably end up on the floor to cushion baby's tummy as he starts to squirm around on his own. While I will be cognizant of what will appeal to baby, artistic presentation and coordination with decor will be considerations. I am thinking of producing some blankets specifically geared to the little man, using grays and heathered blues, with just a touch of charcoal or other deep colors.

I am open to creating a blanket specifically to your requirements, as to color, etc. Leave a message on this blog, and I will get back to you about it. (Your message will not be published online.)

You cannot get this type of blanket from a Chinese factory. My fabric creations are unique, durable, exclusive of design, and of careful workmanship with attention to detail.

The yarn alone cost $45.00 for the large toddler blanket. Depending upon design and size, a baby blanket will take between 20 and 60 hours to complete.  After the item is made, it has to be blocked, which involves pinning and steaming on a large table.

Two sizes will be made:

Traditional baby blanket - 32" X 32" - $125.00
Extra large toddler blanket - 61" X 61" - $165.00

One cannot make much money with high quality, labor-intensive work like this, but I enjoy the creative process, I really need to make some money to supplement my small retirement pension, and I am an ardent believer in helping to preserve home-made American crafts. In addition, this type of work lends itself very well to a life dedicated to PRAYER. I like to say that there is "a prayer in every stitch!"

As a religious hermit, I am not actually a business person. All religious institutions and hermits have to support themselves with work that is in harmony with their vocation, and especially when it comes to physical, creative tasks, which allow for continuation of prayer time.

Independent religious persons do not have institutions that support them. The money asked for in connection with my work is a donation, a suggested minimum amount. In the spirit of charity, if you would like to offer more for any one of my creations, I will gratefully accept it.

Also, if you would like to donate some business tools and/or supplies to help me get this production off the ground, I would be thrilled. In this regard, click on the following links that will take you to my wish lists on Amazon. Amazon has my home address and will mail to me directly.

COLOR BLOCK SUMMER SHAWL

COTTON SUMMER SHAWL

This shawl is 100% cotton, one-of-a-kind, hand made, and completely original of design.  It took 24 hours to produce and is for sale at $140.00 plus actual shipping costs.  It is shipped by United States Postal Service, First Class and includes shipping confirmation.

This is a bright and happy shawl, perfect for a summer bar-b-que or beach party.

Even my cat was fascinated with this unusual shawl.  No worries, though, I snatched it away from him and he won't be walking on it again, the little stinker!

HAND MADE LACE BABY HAT

A friend of mine is waiting for her new granddaughter to be born, and I have crocheted a lace baby bonnet in preparation for the baptism.

This baby hat is made from 100% cotton thread and is entirely original of design and workmanship.  It is adjustable in two locations whereby a chain of thread acts as a drawstring through a lacy channel in the garment.

A similar item would be shipped, complete with cleaning instructions printed on a lovely card, so that whoever receives the garment is assured that it is entirely hand made by an artisan devoted to keeping alive a craft that has mostly died out.

Artisan made home goods and clothing are becoming rare in this age of cheap, mass-produced Chinese materials that neither stand up to the test of time nor rise to the level of quality that a hand-made item typically does.

In exchange for a token donation, I will make a baby hat especially for you.  This hat took 8 hours to crochet and, if you want one that is similar, I ask for a $50 donation (plus shipping costs), which works out to about $6 an hour, far below what an artist's time is worth.  Donation must be made through my Paypal account before I begin work on your garment, and you should receive it within 3 weeks.  Because these garments are made to order and the donation represents only a token price, there are no refunds.

Available colors are: white, light pink, light blue, red, and maroon.  Other colors may be available on special order.  I will have to check my supplier at the time the garment is ordered.

If you would rather wait to see an actual garment I produce before you purchase, please send me your email address and I will advise you each time I add an item for sale. Announcements will be few, as each garment takes a long time to make, and my ability to produce these items is limited.

Please keep in mind that your donation goes toward supporting a disabled, older lady whose life is entirely devoted to God and who prays over and through each item she produces.  I like to say that there's a prayer in every stitch!

If you have any further questions about my lacework, please send me a message, and I will get back to you.

In the meantime, God bless us all.

FANCY LACE SHAWL

As a present to to a family member, I made her a lace shawl that is both durable, feminine and darn pretty, if I do say so myself.  Here are some pictures of it.

This shawl is made from 100% cotton thread and is entirely original of design and workmanship.  A similar item would be shipped, complete with cleaning instructions printed on a lovely card, and bearing a small pink woven tag with my name sewed onto it so that whoever receives the garment is assured that it is entirely hand made by an artisan devoted to keeping alive a craft that has mostly died out.

Artisan made home goods and clothing are becoming rare in this age of cheap, mass-produced Chinese materials that neither stand up to the test of time nor rise to the level of quality that a hand-made item usually does.

In exchange for a token donation, I will make a shawl especially for you.  This shawl took 50 hours to crochet and, if you want one that is similar, I ask for a $300 donation, which works out to only $6 an hour, far below what an artist's time is worth.

If you have any further questions about my lacework, please send me a message, and I will get back to you.

In the meantime, God bless us all.

LACE CREATIONS

Lace Baptismal blanket

This baptismal blanket was made for a friend's grandchild from cotton thread, entirely worked by hand.  It has a double lace border, one longer than the other, of differing motifs.  This blanket took about 40 hours to make and would cost approximately $250 if I were to make one to order for you in this same size.  This is an original item of my own design.

The next few pictures depict a hat that I created to match the baby blanket.  Keep in mind that these items are sized for a newborn.  The hat was very labor intensive.  Again, it is of my own design, and is elaborately hand-worked.  It is also made from 100% cotton thread.  A similar hat would be priced at $75.

All items on this page must be hand-washed in mild soap, very carefully, and laid out to dry in a manner that will keep their shape.

If you would like me to make you a similar blanket and/or hat, please contact me by email with the message line LACE BLANKET to silvercottage@hotmail.com and I will give you a quote.

In the meantime, God bless everyone!  Pray for me, as I pray for you.
